Having plastering work done in your home does not have to be stressful. A little preparation beforehand ensures the job runs smoothly and helps your plasterer deliver the best possible results. Here are our top tips from 15+ years of plastering in London homes.

Before the Plasterer Arrives

• Clear the room: Move furniture, ornaments, and electronics away from the walls being plastered. The more space your plasterer has to work, the better the result.
• Remove wall fixings: Take down pictures, mirrors, curtain rails, and shelving. Remove any nails or screws from the walls.
• Protect floors: While we always lay dust sheets, removing rugs and protecting hardwood floors with cardboard adds extra protection.
• Clear access: Ensure there is a clear path from the front door to the work area for carrying materials and equipment.
• Parking: If possible, reserve a parking spot near your property for the plasterer's van.

During the Work

• Expect dust: Plastering creates fine dust, particularly during preparation. Keep doors to other rooms closed.
• Ventilation: Good airflow helps plaster dry evenly. Open windows when weather permits.
• Water and power: Your plasterer will need access to water and electricity. Ensure both are available.
• Communication: If anything concerns you, speak to your plasterer immediately. Good communication ensures a great result.

After Plastering

• Drying time: Allow 2-6 days for plaster to dry fully. The plaster will change from dark to light pink as it dries.
• Do not heat artificially: Avoid pointing heaters at fresh plaster as rapid drying can cause cracks.
• Mist coat: Before painting, apply a mist coat (watered-down emulsion) to seal the new plaster.
